Walking into your first TRT consultation prepared makes a real difference — you'll get clearer answers and a better sense of whether the clinic is a good fit. Here's what typically happens and how to make the visit count.

This is educational only and not medical advice.

What usually happens

A good first visit covers your symptoms and health history, a physical or telehealth assessment, and an order for baseline bloodwork — testosterone is best drawn in the morning. Many clinics won't prescribe on day one; they wait for your labs and may repeat the test to confirm before recommending treatment.

How to prepare

A little prep makes the visit far more useful:

  • Note your main symptoms and when they started
  • List medications, supplements, and relevant medical history
  • Bring any recent lab results you already have
  • Think about your goals — and whether fertility matters to you now or later
  • If labs are scheduled, ask whether to fast and to come in the morning

Questions worth asking

Use the appointment to evaluate the clinic, not just to be evaluated:

  • What's included in my baseline panel, and how often will I be re-tested?
  • What's the all-in monthly cost, and what does it cover?
  • Is the testosterone FDA-approved or compounded?
  • How do you manage estradiol and hematocrit over time?
  • What are my options if I want to preserve fertility?

Red flags on day one

Be cautious if a clinic offers to prescribe without any bloodwork, can't explain its monitoring schedule, or won't give straight answers on pricing. The best providers welcome these questions. Our guide on choosing a clinic goes deeper on what good care looks like.
